Quick overview of my current PCs that I’m using to tackle the project! My main system MURPHY is up first. Named after Murphy’s Law, which if you’re not familiar states that “anything can go wrong, will go wrong”. This build has had a loooooong upgrade path/rebuild track culminating in its current iteration, my first custom loop water cooled build. The first version of this was an i7 4790k and GTX 980…then two 980s…then a 980 Ti…then two 980 Tis…then two 1080s…then a motherboard failure and platform switch to Ryzen 7 1700…with now a 1080 Ti. Building a custom loop water cooled build during the COVID 19 pandemic was a test of patience, as most of the components I wanted were being shipped internationally, and I needed to correct the components twice. It took several months (and a lot of practice bending acrylic), but it finally came together last summer and has been relatively steadfast since. The full build log is available here if you’re interested.

I do love Oreos, why do you ask?

Another computer shares my normal battlestation space, and that’s the Unreliable LAN Box. It started out as a travel PC that would crash randomly (found out later it was a faulty PCIe riser in the original case I was using), and eventually became a Plex/home server. The final specs are include a Pentium G4560 (very capable little chip – 3.5 GHz CPU with hyper threading for $60?! Slam dunk.), an RX 580 then a GTX 1070, and 16tb in RAID 1. I use it to primarily serve my Plex media to my home theater and occasionally for remote access, and for providing easy file sharing across my network.

Unreliable LAN Box current case (left) – Thermaltake V1, and original case (right) – Silverstone ML-08H.
Bird’s eye of the rat’s nest of cables inside. Early copy of the SBP list in the background!
Well built case, allows for two HDDs next to the side panel. These two were “shucked” from a couple external drives.

Continued in Part II – Travel here.
